NASA developed the air scrubber as a way to eliminate ethylene in the air on the space shuttle Columbia. As astronauts grew fruits and vegetables in space, naturally occurring ethylene gas that causes that fresh produce to ripen and rot had to be mitigated. NASA’s air scrubber pulled the air into tubes coated with titanium dioxide, applied UV light to the tubes, and eliminated the gas.
NASA scientists soon discovered that not only was the scrubber turning ethylene into water and carbon dioxide, it was also destroying bacteria, viruses and other disease-causing microorganisms. This discovery has now revolutionized germ-fighting in hospitals and health centers, workplaces, and other environments that need to be clean and sanitized.
